Frequently asked questions

Who can apply?

You can apply to Bachelor's level studies, if you have finished your secondary education i.e. high school.
As a rule, you can apply for Master's level studies, if you have a first cycle degree - normally a Bachelor's degree - from an institution of higher education. Usually Master's studies are from the same or closely related field as the Bachelor's degree.
To be eligible for PhD studies you must be a holder of a Master's degree.

How can I apply for Doctoral studies?

Contact the university directly, if you wish to apply for Doctoral studies.

Why cannot I find the degree programme I am looking for?

You are able to fill in the application form when the application period begins. Your educational background affects the selection of programmes the system offers for you, i.e. if you do not have a Bachelor's Degree, you can not apply to Master's level studies. Also your choice of university and language of studying affects the selection of degree programmes you can apply to. It is possible that with the choices you made, there are no subjects you can study. Please check which degree programmes can be studied in the university with the language you have selected.

How many degree programmes can I apply to?

There is no limitation on how many universities you can apply to. To how many degree programmes within one university you can apply to, varies between universities and programmes, please consult the university you're interested in applying to.
Please note that you must send as many sets of applications and application documents as the degree programmes you applied to. You should also bear in mind that you must also indicate motivation to all degree programmes you are going to apply to. The degree programmes have unique application requirements. Therefore, prepare yourself to collect different application documents to different degree programmes.

Can I send a copy of my language test result?

TOEFL test scores must come directly from the organisation arranging the test. Score slips, photo copies or attachments to an e-mail message provided by applicants are not accepted.
Universities accept a copy of an IELTS score slip.

Can I apply, if I have not received my degree certificate yet?

As a general rule you can apply, but check the university's Web site before applying. You should send in the documents that you have at the moment, even if you are in the last year of your secondary education or your university studies. Do not wait to receive your final diploma or degree certificate, if it is not available within the application period. Instead, submit the documents you have and depending on the programme you are applying to, point out the anticipated graduation date at the Application Form or send a statement from the home institution in English, Finnish or Swedish stating the expected date of graduation.

Do I need to mail all the enclosures to University Admissions Finland at the same time?

If you send all the documents at the same time, your application will be processed faster.  However if you don’t have all the required documents at the moment, you can submit your application and documents separately. Do not forget to attach your Application Form number to each document you send.

What happens after I have compiled my Application Form?

The information you have given will be compiled into a PDF document, which will become your Application Form as you print it out. You must send the Application Form and all the required enclosures to University Admissions Finland for processing by mail. University Admissions Finland processes your educational certificates including credential evaluation and verifies your language skills. Please note thatUniversity Admissions Finland does not accept e-mail attachments.
After processing, all applications will be sent to the universities who will then assess the content of your application and carry out the student selections.

Where can I get information about my application process after I have mailed the Application Form and needed enclosures?

Before your application has been processed, UAF cannot give you information whether your documents have arrived or not. We will inform you by e-mail as soon as your application and enclosures have been processed. Please, be patient. This might take a few weeks after we have received your application. You can also follow the process of your application from your My UAF account.  You will be able to go check for yourself if you have any missing documents or for example, whether your language test has arrived and has been attached to your application.
After processing, your application will be sent to the university for assessing. While the process is going on, the universities are not able to give any information about applicant’s admission status. Later in the spring, the university will inform the applicants on admission results. University Admissions Finland cannot give you any information about the student selections.

What are the costs of studying in Finland? Is it possible to get a scholarship?

At the present, there are only a few degree programmes in Finland that charge tuition fees. For further information, please contact the university that you are interested in applying to.

Alll Bachelor's and Master's degree students are required to pay the annual Student Union membership fee (approx. 80 euros). The cost of living may be as high as 600 euro per month (including rent). The cost of study materials varies from one field of study to another. In most cases the use of libraries is free of charge. Nevertheless, some books included in course requirements may have to be bought. Please note that universities have none or only a very limited number of scholarships or grants for new incoming students.
